Texas State University is located in the growing community of San Marcos, Texas about 25 miles south of Austin. It began in 1903 as Southwest Texas Normal College with a population 303.
Undergoing years of name changing, the home of the Bobcats later changed from Southwest Texas Normal College to Teacher College to Southwest Texas State and then finally to Texas State University as the Texas State University system was compiled in 2003. Each name change reflects the founders desire to serve a greater role in the community and give the university a greater identity and standing in popularity among other schools.
Today, to support it's growing and thriving student body, Texas State University serves as the community's largest employer. With a diverse student body of over 28,000, students can choose areas of study from 110 Bachelors, 88 Masters or 8 Doctoral programs. Adding to its diversity, the University not only enrolls students from the United States, but also hosts students from as far away as China, Thailand, Africa and Russia.
As a state school, in 2008-2009 in-state residents can expect to pay roughly $6900 in tuition.
Texas State expects students under 21 to live in one of 18 residence halls that are close and convenient to campus. The price of these dorms varies depending upon the dorm and living arrangements chosen. Residents will have a choice of Traditional style, Suite style, or Private Style halls. Depending on which dorm a student chooses, these residencies range from $1221 to $2,556 per semester for the 2008-2009 school year.
The traditional style dorms include: Arnold Hall, Beretta Hall, Brogdon Hall, Burleson Hall, Butler Hall, Elliott Hall, Fallas Hall, Hornsby Hall, Jackson Hall, Lantana Hall, Laurel Hall, Retama Hall, Smith Hall, and Sterry Hall. These types of hall are exactly what their name implies. They are traditional dorms with two students to a room and community bathrooms that several rooms share.
If you are looking for a little more private living situation, you may think about checking out Bexar Hall, College Inn, San Jacinto Hall, San Marcos Hall, San Saba Hall, or Tower Hall. All of these residencies are Suite Style dorms comprised of 2 to 4 bedrooms sharing a common and bathroom area. For the 2008-2009 school year these dorms range from $2442 to $3400 per semester.
The ultimate in on-campus living in terms of privacy would be to go with Blanco Hall, Texas State's only Private Style Suite. In this dorm two or three students share a large room, but each room has it's own private bathroom.
